PREAMBLE.

The month of August, 2010 passed without a single incident reported within our project’s area of operation. This made August, 2010 the most peaceful ever since the birth of our project. There was only a report that Samburu morans attacked a Turkana manyatta at Kawop somewhere beyond Baragoi town and killing one person and injuring another. This report was not confirmed.

PEACE MEETINGS

11/08/2010 Two staff members and Paul Leshimpiro met with the Pokot men and arranged for a bigger peace meeting.

14/08/2010 a workshop for Marti/Suyian women took place at Marti centre. The participants were:

1.       10 Turkana women from formerly Mbukoi village

2.       10 Turkana women from Marti village

3.       10 Turkana women from Charda village

4.       20 Samburu women from Suyian village(Lorora)

In total the participants were 50 in number. There were also those who were not invited but took part in the workshop. The participants resolute to co-exist peacefully and requested to meet Pokot women also in the future.

22/08/2010 The previously arranged Pokot morans peace workshop took place and turned to be a meeting due to illiteracy and language barriers. The participants were 58 in number and participated effectively. They promised to maintain peace and requested Samburu and the Turkana communities to do the same. The venue to this workshop was Malaso( Down the Escarpment).

31/08/2010 Angata Nanyukie location elders workshop took place at Morijo and attended by 63 elders. The participants came from the following outstations:

The elders appreciated the peace enjoyed for the last eight months –the period in which our programme had been operational. They also promised to maintain peace and fully support the peace programme. They requested for a chance to share with the Pokot and Turkana men in one peace meeting.

WAY FORWARD

·         Organizing for a joint peace meeting between Turkana, Samburu and Pokot together

·         Where possible peace meeting for Turkana and Pokot together

·         Marti/Suyian elders workshop

CHALLENGES

·         Organizing joint peace meetings requires a lot of transportation hence its very expensive.

·         It’s also not yet very sure that the Pokots and the Turkana would agree to meet together at one venue since of late the two had some conflicts.

·         Pokots still requests sponsorship for children to go to Morijo Primary school. We are still waiting for your response.

·         There is only one month left (September 2010) for the projects life to come to an end. This will limit the activities of the MIPPP.

CONCLUSION.

To our observations as MIPPP, conflict had reduced drastically. We hope something is done to make contacts of the warring communities more frequent and bring them together. We take this opportunity to thank , very sincerely AMICI di PADRE ALDO for the support you’ve given us for this project and many more others.

MIPPP also thank God for the peace enjoyed and prays that the same peace continues for ever.
