The month of April 2010 remained calm in most of the time. There were a few incidences reported, some were not confirmed between Samburu, Pokots and Turkana.

Some 50(fifty) heads of cattle were stolen by Pokots from Turkana side on 06.04.2010 unnoticed. Animals were never recovered .this occurred in Nachola area near Baragoi which was out of our operations. On 11.04.2010 a family of missionaries was shot at by unknown bandits near marti centre. a passenger was injured and flown to Nairobi  for treatment .The bandits were not found but footsteps led to Nachola area near Baragoi.the vehicle in which missionaries were traveling did not stop during the shooting . There was also a raid carried out by Pokots at Pura area where one young Samburu man was left dead and some 40(forty) heads of cattle were stolen by the attackers. This area was still out of our reach as it was near Loosuk. Negotiations are still on to recover the remaining raided cattle from the Pokot community and 9(nine), of them were recovered and returned to their owners. We look forward to hear that the remaining cattle were returned very soon. There was some theft of Turkana cattle between Barsaloi and Wamba as they were migrating to Isiolo district. This theft was alleged to have been done by the Samburu. This report was not confirmed.

MEETINGS

1.      On 24/4/2010, the project organized a youth for peace friendly matches between Samburu and Turkana youths. The venue of the matches was Marti Primary School and three teams for boys and two for girls participated in these event. This teams were:

(i)                 Morijo for both boys and girls

(ii)               Marti for both boys and girls

(iii)             Angata Nanyokie and Nkorika combined for boys only.

The meeting was very successful and very many residents from both sides attended. The project staffs were happy when people played, talked and ate together as brothers and sisters

       2. MIPPP also organized a peace meeting at Nkirenyi primary school for Samburu community. There were large number of participants both men and women including nominated Member of Parliament for Samburu West constituency

2.      A meeting was also scheduled for 30th April 2010 with the two bodies being the initiators (MIPPP) and Laikipia Peace Caravan. The meeting continued as planned and was attended by Samburu and Pokot People. The project staff had a good chance to talk with the Pokots from Malaso and arranged for weekly meetings at Siambu starting from 12th May 2010. The crowd was impressive from both communities. Since dialogue is not a problem as per now, we hope the problems will continue to go down and eventually get finished. The Honorable Mrs.Maison Leshoomo (nominated Member of Parliament for Samburu West) attended and addressed the two communities.

CONCLUSION

Picture
1.      There is high hope that the Samburu and the Turkana communities will enjoy a peaceful period of time as well as the Samburu and the Pokot.
2.      The big challenges are heavy rains which are falling at the moment and making roads impassable and the distances between the warring communities have increased
3.      Our activities funds for the month of April was given to us by Fr. Peter on 29th April 2010.That is to say we are late in panning and implementing of activities by one month.
4.      We look forward to receiving May 2010 allocation soon and be able to plan to visit Malaso for Pokot meetings and Suiyan for Samburu/Turkana meeting.
5.      We also look forward to recruit representatives from the Pokot communities and start working with them and organize regular medical treatments and clinics to the Pokot community and children respectively.
